New Mexico

The cities of Española and neighboring Chimayó have become hotspots for lowriders in the northern part of the state. Española is billed as the "lowrider capital of the world".

“Lowrider” is the name used for cars transformed into cultural expressions and for the dedicated aficionados who make and drive them. Historically, lowriders were mostly Latino men from Texas, the Southwest, and southern California.

In 2007, Lowrider was taken over by Source Interlink Media, now known as TEN: The Enthusiast Network.

TRADITION. While the exact origins of lowriders are often a subject of fierce debate, in the 1980s Española declared itself the Lowrider Capital of the World. The title has stuck ever since.

The Chicano movement incorporated lowriding as a way to honor their Mexican-American culture. Additionally, car clubs became involved in community services, supporting worker unions and helping to provide food to the community. The low-riding community became less about cars and more about helping society.

Cruising was outlawed decades ago, and critics say the ban was aimed at lowriders — classic cars whose hydraulic suspensions allow them to hug the asphalt, or make them bounce — as the culture developed a bad reputation through associations with gangs and drug dealing in the late 80s and 90s.

This lowrider is possibly the most famous of them all ever made, and she's from East Los Angeles, the Gypsy Rose.

Jesse Valadez was a Mexican American lowrider and artist based in East Los Angeles who became known as a major figure in lowriding, a cultural practice among Chicanos that he helped pioneer.

Their origins remain up for debate, with post-war Los Angeles making the strongest claim to birthing lowriders as a Latino reaction to Anglo hot rod culture. Today in communities from Los Angeles, San Antonio, northern New Mexico and elsewhere, car culture thrives.

As the town grew, so did the need for a name. No one knows exactly how Las Cruces was selected, but most historians conclude it is derived from the Spanish translation for “the crosses.” The coming of the railroad in the late 1800s brought even more prosperity to the up-and-coming town.

The art of lowriding has deep roots in Chicano history and culture. San José was home to a vibrant lowrider scene, centered around the famous east-side intersection of Story and King. The city was also the birthplace of the legendary Lowrider Magazine.

Vehicles on display will include one of the world's most famous lowriders, the 1964 Chevrolet Impala known as “Gypsy Rose.” The iconic ride earned its initial notoriety in the 1970s television sitcom “Chico and the Man.” In 2017, Gypsy Rose became the first lowrider to be inducted into the National Historic Vehicle ...

After the story mission is finished, you can locate the Challenge in the exact same location, triggered by interacting with an NPC - a mechanic outside of Unity Station in Los Santos (on the other side of the wall to the challenge, as seen above).

The Gypsy Rose of the Valadez family was the first lowrider ever to be inducted into the Historic Vehicle Association and is now housed at the Petersen Automotive Museum.
