As unhappy theatrical families go, Arthur Miller's Lomans are right up there with Eugene O'Neill's Tyrones in the misery sweepstakes, American division. No surprise, then, that both families are invoked, overtly or covertly, in Donald Margulies' sad-family play "The Loman Family Picnic." And while Margulies certainly gives his despairing clan all the melancholy of their stagebound forebears, and considerably more outright humor, it's doubtful Doris, Herbie and sons will be remembered in the elite ranks of Willy, Jamie, et al. -- and not merely because Margulies doesn't provide them a surname.
