If you want an easier understanding of the series, watch it in this order.
Railgun > Index > Railgun S > Index II or Railgun T > Index III
Railgun is the canon start of the series since it happened first before Index appeared in the story.
Some parts overlap with each other like the Sister's arc in Index and in Railgun S. Daihaseisai arc starts and ends with Index II while Railgun T covers everything in-between. After that, it ends with Index III.
Here's a more in depth guide to the series. I'm sorry if it's too small, but just bear with it.

I followed the true chronological order and I must say, it is difficult to remember where you left off and where to continue but I am quite enjoying it so I suggest you to give it a try.

Last I checked this was everything that's been released up until now, going by their main name in the MAL database, sorted according to air date and tagged with Type (in case you want to skip OVAs & Specials)

Skip Index and only watch Railgun and Accelerator instead. Index is garbage.

However certain aspects of railgun are actually spoiled in the first index, so the impact isn't as great when watching misaka's story in the first railgun. It seems that's what most fans would recommend, starting with the first 2 railguns and then going back to the first index.
Oh yeah and then theres the chronological order in which you'll have to jump from season to season and watch episodes from everywhere to get what apparently is the most concise version, but personally I would find that a nuisance. Just literally search up how to watch index/railgun and you'll find this viewing order somewhere
But what can I say, I haven't even started yet. But I still do intend to watch it in the airing order, starting with index. I was initially intending to only watch railgun, but then I thought I should watch index to for a more fleshed out understanding of the world. But if anyone can recommend me not to, as I hear it gets somewhat boring, then I'll definitely consider heeding their advice

1. Read the LN.
Anime was it's best 20000 years ago, when cavemen drew art with real depth.
Modern anime is all garbage. I miss great old days of anime.

s1 is a rocky start. s2 is great but toned down a lot.
the second halves of both railgun series are anime original filler and goes against the tone and characters.
s3 was butchered beyond imagination.
the accelerator manga is bad, drawn badly, written badly and shouldnt've been animated from the start.
I say this as an index fan. I used to love it but s3 killed all my good will.
